Arelis Hernandez is a local political reporter for The Washington Post covering her home county of Prince George's. She has covered major national stories including the Orlando nightclub massacre and activism in the wake of Michael Brown’s shooting death and was among a team of reporters in Baltimore covering the unrest in the city after the death of Freddie Gray. She worked previously for The Orlando Sentinel, where she covered breaking news and homicide and won a national writing award for her coverage of the complicated identity dynamics of the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Arelis is also an active member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Asian American Journalists Association. She is director of AAJA’s annual high school journalism program, JCamp, of which she is a 2004 participant.
